Dr. Barry Antonio Costa-Pierce

Barry Antonio Costa-Pierce has a Ph.D. in Oceanography and Aquaculture from the University of Hawai’i and an M.S. in Zoology and Limnology from the University of Vermont. He is an Emeritus Professor of Fisheries & Aquaculture at the University of Rhode Island and an Emeritus Professor of Marine Sciences at the University of New England, USA. Currently, he is a Professor II in the Faculty of Biosciences and Aquaculture, Nord University, Bodø, Norway, assisting in the delivery of the Nordic Masters in the “Sustainable Production and Use of Marine Bioresources”. He also leads two international companies – Earth Ocean Foods Systems (ETHOS), Inc. and the Ecological Aquaculture, LLC – managing R&D projects in Norway, Saudi Arabia, Hawai’i, and Maine, USA. Dr. Costa-Pierce has spent the last 8 years assisting University of Gothenburg in the development of the Swedish Mariculture Research Center (SWEMARC). In October 2023 the Faculty of Science of the University of Gothenburg awarded him a Doctor Honoris Causa in Science (Honorary Doctorate). Dr. Costa-Pierce is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Institute of Fishery Research Biologists.
